RULES

  1. Photocopied music is NOT allowed per copyright law.

  2. An original score must be provided to the adjudicator.

  3. Memorization is optional. Concerto Division selections must be memorized to be eligible for Concerto Playoffs.

  4. Only published music of recognized classical repertoire may be used. Transcriptions are acceptable, but NOT adaptations or arrangements. Please contact the Music Advisory Panel with any questions regarding your edition.

  5. Measure numbers must be marked in the left margin of each brace.

  6. Omit repeats except when absolutely necessary. Observe Da Capos and essential repeats. Cuts are acceptable only in cadenzas and tutti sections.

  7. Performers must play within specified time limits. The Adjudicator or monitor will stop the performance if time is exceeded.


PERFORMANCE PROCEDURE

  1. Entrants should report to the Registration Desk at least 15 minutes before the scheduled class time.

  2. Music should be opened to the proper page when presented to the monitor.

  3. Oral adjudication will be given after all students have played. Participants are required to stay to the end of the class. Only accompanists or teachers may leave before the end of a session.

  4. Pick up your music, written adjudication form, and Certificate of Participation at the close of each class.

  5. Teachers, family members and guests are welcome to attend adjudicated classes, but are expected to remain quiet and unobtrusive throughout the session. Verbal or non-verbal communication or coaching is not permitted.

  6. Turn off all cell phones and pagers. Flash cameras are not permitted in the performance room. Video and audio equipment, if discreetly used, may be acceptable subject to the approval of the adjudicator.

COMPLETE PROGRAM SECTION (BRASS)

Participants will perform works from different periods demonstrating a variety of musical styles. One movement of a sonata or concerto constitutes one piece and such selections are appropriate as are shorter pieces. For Brass only, jazz repertoire is allowed in the 20th Century/Contemporary period.

Performers in Class 61 will play two (2) pieces, one each from two of the five periods listed below. All required periods must be performed during the adjudication.

Performers in Classes 62, 63 and 64 will play three (3)pieces, one each from three of the five periods listed below. One movement of a sonata or concerto constitutes one piece and such selections are appropriate as are shorter pieces. All required periods must be performed during the adjudication.

To verify the correct period classification of a composer, check the Composer Classification List , which is available online. If the composer does not appear on the Composer Classification List, contact a member of the Music Advisory Panel well in advance of the registration deadline. Period classifications for pieces, which are already in our database are predetermined, and cannot be changed.

SOLO SECTION (BRASS)

Performers will play one or more selections within the allowed time. Music may be of any form and from any period.

Additional Rules

  1. Entrants have their own choice of repertoire.

  2. Omit repeats except when absolutely necessary. Cuts are unacceptable.

  3. All performers (except an accompanist) must be students.

  4. When performers are at different grade levels, they must enter the class appropriate to the oldest participant.

  5. Each member must submit an individual entry. The names of the other participants must appear on each ensemble entry. Mail, in a single envelope: forms for all members of the ensemble; one check per ensemble.
